Chaos

“So it would seem,” Alex murmured.

He dropped the smoke grenade, and the black smoke spread throughout the office within seconds. It was an amazing new device that the FBI research department had come up with. It produced almost-black smoke particles. Black was a good absorber and emitter of heat. It messed up the heat signatures, so even with heat-reading devices they couldn’t be sure. The smoke particles also completely obstructed him from view, and at the same time they spread so fast that they didn’t know what hit them.

Alex jumped out the window as the guards shouted in confusion. He knew he would have to make his move fast. He could see a group of them following him. He just hoped that the guards in the office would come after him as well, so Gina had a chance to escape in all the chaos.

He made his way straight towards the dense trees that littered the side of the garden. He grabbed one of the branches and started to climb. He could hear dogs barking in the distance—they had let them loose. If he could climb the tree in time, he could try to jump onto the wall, and use it to hoist himself onto the other side. The wall of course had motion sensors on it, but there was no point in worrying about triggering them now.

He looked down and saw the dogs at the base of the trees. A few of the men had started climbing behind them. He heard shooting and felt a few bullets whiz by him.

“Shoot,” he muttered, climbing as fast as he could, trying to maintain his footing. The last thing he wanted was for one of the branches to break underneath and send him falling down to the dogs. But the men were gaining on him, and at that moment one of the bullets hit his shoulder. His hand lost its grip as he let out a gasp of pain.

He looked down, pulled out a small bomb from his pocket, and let it drop. He didn’t wait to look at the impact. He forced his injured arm to move, and through the boughs of pain, he pulled himself up higher and higher. The bomb started to spread the potent sleeping gas, and Alex held his breath, well aware of how strong it was. Once he got high enough to be able to see the wall, he jumped.

For a second he was suspended in midair. His good hand grabbed the wall. Using every bit of his strength, he pulled himself up by one arm. He took one last look at the chaos behind, and then jumped down to the other side.

He landed on the hard ground, and his body protested at the assault. He forced himself up and started running straight towards the dark alley as fast as he could.

He needed to get to the director. They had to get Gina out. This mission had been compromised.
